Near Light: A Captivating Synthesis of Video Animation and Dance

Exploring the Nostalgic Sensibility of Macao

The multimedia project Near Light, created by Lampo Leong, Yves Sonolet, and Zhihao Li, combines video animation and dance to evoke a nostalgic sensibility for Macao, a tranquil peninsula in southern China. This unique collaboration captures the essence of the city's transformation from a peaceful peninsula to a bustling metropolis, inviting audiences to reflect on the meaning of life and happiness.

Through the lens of a Canon 5DSR camera, the team filmed mesmerizing footage of floating lights on the streets of Macao after midnight. These ethereal visuals, edited in Adobe Premiere, create a dreamy effect that transports viewers to a bygone era. The video animation is carefully synchronized with a captivating musical score composed by Ólafur Arnalds, enhancing the emotional impact of the piece.

While Near Light can be enjoyed as a standalone video, it truly comes to life when combined with live dance performances. The choreography, masterfully crafted by Zhihao Li, adds another layer of meaning to the video animation. Dancers from the University of Macau's Dance Troupe bring the visuals to life on stage, creating a truly immersive and touching experience.

The multimedia project can be presented in various settings, from screenings to multimedia shows. In a live performance, a large LED panel serves as the backdrop, enveloping the dancers and audience in a captivating visual display. This innovative combination of video animation, dance, and technology creates a unique and unforgettable experience.

Near Light is not only a stunning artistic creation but also a thought-provoking exploration of the impact of rapid economic development on a city. Macao, known for its thriving gambling industry, has undergone significant changes in recent years. Through its nostalgic imagery and introspective themes, Near Light invites viewers to question the deeper meaning of life amidst the pursuit of material wealth.

The project has garnered recognition and acclaim, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Movie, Video, and Animation Design category in 2019. This prestigious accolade celebrates Near Light's outstanding creativity and ingenious design, which seamlessly blend art, science, and technology to create a truly immersive experience.

With Near Light, Lampo Leong, Yves Sonolet, and Zhihao Li have created a captivating synthesis of video animation and dance that transports viewers to a nostalgic world. This multimedia project not only showcases the beauty of Macao but also invites audiences to reflect on the meaning of life in a rapidly changing world.
